THE GIFT OF THE MAGI
Adaptation, music and lyrics by Peter Ekstrom from the short story by O. Henry
Peter Ekstrom's GIFT OF THE MAGI ran for 17 consecutive years at Actors Theatre of Louisville as part of its repertoire. It was as much a part of Louisville's Christmas as that delightful chestnut, A CHRISTMAS CAROL. It was loved by old and young, school groups, corporate groups and natty old gentlemen in tennis shoes. Everyone related to its soaring melodies, including the critics who praised it endlessly. For a theatre like ours, it had the additional merits of being easy and economic to produce but, more importantly, it was simply first-rate theatre with a warm message and a grand score. I can't think of anything that we have been prouder to commission. -- Jon Jory, Producing Director, Actors Theatre of Louisville

O. Henry's classic story about gift-giving comes to life on stage for heartwarming family entertainment during the holiday season. The talents of the master of surprise endings combine with the gifts of a contemporary composer for a spirited musical filled with laughter, wonder, and love. With turn-of-the century costume and scenic design, the stage is set for a Christmas production that strikes a chord in the hearts of the young and old alike.
O. Henry gives us Jim and Della Young -- newlyweds approaching their first Christmas together in 1905, Although struggling to meet the rent, they could not be happier or more in love. Each wants to give the other a special Christmas gift as a symbol of love. To do so, they sacrifice their most prized possessions. Jim sells his gold watch to buy combs for Della's beautiful long hair. She cuts off her hair for a wig-maker to purchase a chain for the heirloom her husband no longer owns. Shock and disappointment quickly give way to joyful understanding: They have already presented each other with life's most cherished gifts.
Peter Ekstrom gives us a lively script and enchanting music to match the spirit of the O. Henry story. The action between the infatuated newlyweds is playful and fun. The lyrics -- always intelligent and often humorous -- emphasize the comedy and drama experienced in everyday life. Capturing the full range of emotions shared by the couple, Ekstrom's adaptation for the stage artfully sends out the message intended by O. Henry. Audience members leave the theatre smiling, laughing and singing the catchy tune, "Tomorrow Is Christmas."
In a performance time of less than one hour, story and song blend together for a celebration of love and giving that continues to define the true meaning of Christmas. From the frolic in the opening scene, to the last uplifting moment, The Gift of The Magi is a magical theatrical experience for families to share.
